The Price of Courage: The Story of Vasyl Huliak

Brody Track District
4th Category Track Fitter

Vasyl Huliak is 31 years old. He is a track fitter from the Brody Track District, a true railway worker who continued his family's trade. His mother, Halyna Apollinariivna, works as a crossing keeper, and his father, Mykola Ivanovych, dedicated 36 years of his life to the railway as a track master and only recently went on well-deserved retirement.

Vasyl himself has been working on the railway since 2018.

On February 26, 2022, without hesitation, he stood up to defend Ukraine.

For almost two years, Vasyl fought on the front line. On February 19, 2024, during fierce battles near the village of Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region, he sustained an extremely severe mine-blast injury. The consequences were tragic: to save his life, doctors had to amputate Vasyl's left arm and both legs.

The fight for Vasyl began that very moment. He was taken to the Mechnikov Hospital in Dnipro. When his condition was stabilized, Ukrzaliznytsia got involved: with the assistance of the Chairman of the Board, Vasyl was evacuated by a special resuscitation train to a military hospital in Kyiv.

In the capital, he underwent several extremely complex surgeries. On June 21, 2024, the President of Ukraine awarded Vasyl Huliak the Order "For Courage", III class.

Now our colleague is undergoing an incredibly difficult rehabilitation path at the Kyiv center "TITANOVI REHAB". Ahead lies a long struggle for recovery, and the "Iron Family" program is there to support Vasyl and his family at every stage of this journey.
