Living for the Granddaughter's Sake: The Story of Serhii Holinka

2nd Category Pump Installation Operator of the Water Supply Section

Serhii Ivanovych Holinka is a railway worker with vast experience. He started his path back in 1982 at the Kharkiv locomotive depot. After a break, in 2017, he returned to the iron family – as a pump installation operator at Kharkiv station.

And two years later, in 2019, he brought his son Andrii to the railway.

Andrii quickly mastered the profession, later becoming a fitter. Together with his wife Oksana, they had many plans: to raise their 13-year-old daughter Khrystyna, to have a son, to travel, to grow professionally.

These dreams were cut short on April 10, 2022, 10 days before Andrii's 35th birthday.

An enemy shell took the lives of the young couple in an instant. Their daughter Khrystyna became an orphan.

For Serhii Ivanovych and his wife Maryna, this was an unspeakable blow – they lost their only son. Despite their own grief, the grandfather and grandmother took on all the care for their granddaughter; Serhii Ivanovych arranged official guardianship. They try to be nearby every minute to support Khrystyna in this terrible loss.

Despite all the dangers, the family remains in their native Kharkiv.

In this most difficult period, Ukrzaliznytsia did not leave its people alone. The "Iron Family" program and colleagues provide Serhii and Khrystyna with constant support – material, moral, and psychological.

No one will return a son to his parents, or parents to a child. But the feeling that you are not alone, that colleagues are nearby, gives Serhii Ivanovych the strength to live and work on – for the sake of his son's memory and for the sake of his granddaughter's future.
