How Railway Workers Help the Country Survive This Winter

Railway workers continue to help the nation hold on and recover after massive enemy shelling.

Emergency Repair Brigades Every day, over 40 Ukrzaliznytsia emergency teams work in Kyiv to restore heat to Ukrainian homes as quickly as possible and eliminate the consequences of attacks on critical infrastructure. These teams include railway workers from various regions of the country, some of whom previously restored heating networks in Alchevsk back in 2006.

Energy Independence To relieve the Ukrainian energy grid, Ukrzaliznytsia, under the direction of the Headquarters for Emergency Response in the Energy Sector, is launching electricity imports. This winter, the company will import about 50% of its total electricity consumption.

"Invincibility Wagons" (Mobile Hubs) Railway workers have already deployed 16 mobile "Points of Invincibility" — known as "Invincibility Wagons". They are currently operating in Boryspil, Brovary, Fastiv, Vasylkiv, and Vyshneve. Since January 10 alone, they have hosted over 5,000 people.

Another 100 wagons are ready for deployment to various regions of Ukraine, including frontline communities. We are awaiting requests from local municipalities. We extend our gratitude to All Hands and Hearts, World Central Kitchen, Hachiko Foundation, and White Stork for helping us create these wagons.

Official Statement

"In the conditions of full-scale war, Ukrzaliznytsia has become, without exaggeration, a strategic enterprise — both in logistics and in the national life support system, especially during the toughest winter months and massive enemy attacks. Thanks to the work of railway repair crews from all over Ukraine, heat supply was restored in over 30 buildings that remained without heating after the Russian strikes on January 9. At the same time, railway workers support people in 'Invincibility Wagons' and stationary hubs at stations. Such coordinated work helps cities withstand enemy blows and return to normal life faster," said Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine — Minister for Communities and Territories Development.

Stationary "Points of Invincibility" "Points of Invincibility" are operating at railway stations across the country. For thousands of people, they have become places of warmth, connection, and support during the most difficult moments.

  • In total, 97 points operate at Ukraine's largest stations. Since the beginning of winter, they have hosted over 400,000 people, and since the onset of severe frosts (January 9, 2026) — nearly 150,000.

  • About 50 more points operate at smaller stations nationwide, where people can warm up, charge gadgets, and drink warm tea.

Food Train The Food Train continues to operate in Irpin, Kyiv region. It has already prepared about 15,000 hot mealsfor residents and emergency railway crews working daily to restore heat to homes. Heated tents are set up next to the mobile kitchens, where people can eat, drink hot tea, and warm up. We thank the Howard G. Buffett Foundation for funding this project.

We remain in constant contact with communities and are ready to lend our "iron shoulder" at any moment, utilizing all possible resources to bring normal life, warmth, and a sense of support back to the people as quickly as possible.
