Konstantin Markevich
Konstantin was born in the town of Verkhovtseve in the Dnipropetrovsk region. He graduated from the Dnipropetrovsk Railway Transport Technical School, specializing in "Technical Maintenance and Repair of Wagons."
He worked on the railway for 15 years, initially as a foreman and later as a track layer in the Verkhovtseve track section.
On April 9, 2019, Konstantin was mobilized. He served as a senior driver of the 1st motorized infantry squad of the 2nd motorized infantry platoon of the 2nd motorized infantry company.
48-year-old Konstantin Markevich was killed on the first day of the war, February 24, 2022, along with his colleague Oleksandr Zharavin in Henichesk, Kherson region, as a result of an enemy shell hitting their BRDM. In civilian life, both railway workers worked in the same track section and served in the same unit.
He was posthumously awarded the Order of "For Courage" III class.
His wife Iryna recalls: "Konstantin was a kind and honest person, multi-talented. He graduated from music school with an accordion class and also taught himself to play the guitar, bayan, piano, and harmonica. He had a wonderful voice and sang well. Music and singing echoed not only in our home—he was often invited as a musician and singer to weddings. He valued honesty above all in people and could not tolerate lies. He loved fishing, beekeeping, and played football and tennis, including in railway competitions."
At one point, Konstantin's eldest son Anton signed a contract for military service in the Armed Forces in the Joint Forces Operation zone. His father was very worried about him and soon followed with the words: "I will be nearby; maybe I can save you from death."
And that’s what happened. On February 24, 2022, Konstantin called his wife and briefly said: "Take care of the children." That same day, he was killed in front of his son. He covered the withdrawal of our troops, giving them the necessary time. Instead of Anton, he took the wheel of an armored reconnaissance vehicle. An enemy shell hit the BRDM, instantly igniting it. There was no chance to escape.
"Our children are proud of their father. The younger son inherited Kyrylo's musical talent and is also studying at music school. The elder son has had a very hard time coping with the loss of his father. After several injuries, Anton was demobilized and underwent a long rehabilitation," Iryna shares.
Konstantin is survived by his wife and three children: 27-year-old Anton, 26-year-old Anastasia, and 10-year-old Romchik.
The team of the Verkhovtseve track section of the regional branch "Dniprovsk Railway" of JSC "Ukrzaliznytsia" deeply mourns the irreparable loss and expresses its sincerest condolences to Konstantin's family. His heroic act, selflessness, and courage will forever remain an example for us. The bright memory of our colleague and Hero will live on eternally.
