Oleksandr KUCHMIY
Oleksandr was born in the city of Polohy, Zaporizhia region. He graduated from Zaporizhzhia National University with a degree in "Olympic Professional Sports." He dreamed of becoming a football coach.
In August 2011, he began working on the railway as a trackman at the Polohy track distance. In 2019, he signed a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, serving as a senior sailor in the 503rd Separate Marine Battalion. With the onset of the war, he served as a senior gunner in the 1st squad of the 1st mortar platoon of the 1st mortar battery. Since March 2022, Oleksandr was considered missing in action. In April 2024, his mother received notification of her son's death.
Soldier Oleksandr Kuchmiy was killed on March 25, 2022, while defending Mariupol in the Donetsk region. He will forever remain 33 years old.
His mother, Liubov Viktorivna, recalls that Sashko was responsible, kept his word to the Polohy track workers, and played football for 12 years for his unit's team. His room was filled with sports awards. Sashko went to the front with his cousin. He died in Mariupol when the vehicle he was in was shelled by a tank.
Posthumously, Oleksandr was awarded the Order of "For Courage" III degree, which was received by his mother.
Oleksandr is survived by his mother, Liubov Viktorivna.
The team at the Polohy track distance of the regional branch "Dniprovskyi Railway" of JSC "Ukrzaliznytsia" deeply mourns the loss of their colleague, Oleksandr Kuchmiy. He was a dedicated worker, a talented athlete, and a true Hero who defended Mariupol to the last as part of the Marine Corps. We take pride in his responsibility and courage, posthumously recognized by the award. Glory to the marine who will forever remain 33 years old!
