On the second day of the war, February 25, Stepan and his colleagues came under aerial shelling. In Kupiansk city of Kharkiv region, a russian aircraft was aiming at fuel tanks, but hit a passenger train, namely, the compartment car where Stepan was. The impact was very powerful, the fragments injured the man in the head and legs. Miraculously, his wife Anzhela, also a conductor, was not injured. It was she who called an ambulance for the husband. Stepan was treated for a long time. Finally, doctors decided not to remove the fragments from his arm and head, as it could be dangerous for his life.
The man cannot work because he can barely move on crutches, his legs constantly swell and hurt. I had to take loans from the bank for treatment, now I have nothing to pay back. Stepan is in despair, because as a man he cannot earn money and support his family, and he still has three years to retire. He proudly says that in 2023 it will be 30 years since he has been working on the railway.
