Vasyl Shchurko
Vasyl Shchurko was born in the village of Shumyna, located in the Lviv region. Before the war, he worked for 3.5 years as a trackman of the 3rd category at the Sambir track machine station for earthworks repair.
Colleagues recall that he was a talented, diligent, and disciplined worker, respected by his peers, and a caring and attentive person. Vasyl was an avid mushroom picker and loved long walks in the forest.
During the war, while on leave, Vasyl had a conversation with a local priest. The priest suggested that he arrange guardianship for his mother, as she was very ill and moved with the help of medical walkers. But Vasyl replied, "If I don't go to the front, then who will?" And with that, he ended the conversation.
Sister Nadiya recounted that before his death, Vasyl shielded two younger comrades with his body, but unfortunately, they also did not survive the drone strike.
Soldier Vasyl Shchurko was killed on May 7, 2024, the day after his 47th birthday, as a result of an enemy drone strike near the village of Torske in the Donetsk region. He served as a rigger in the supply platoon of the Kramatorsk district in Donetsk region.
Vasyl was divorced. He adored his daughter Liubov, his sisters, and his mother. Before the war, Vasyl regularly attended church.
The team at the Sambir track machine station for earthworks repair is deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic loss of their colleague Vasyl Shchurko. We share the pain of this irreparable loss with his mother, daughter Liubov, and sisters.
