Andriy Zhovanyk
Andriy was born in Kyiv and graduated from the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, holding the highest qualification as a technical supervision engineer. He once built "Metrograd" in Kyiv and managed finishing works at the Puppet Theatre. In 2021, he began working at Ukrzaliznytsia as an electromechanical engineer in the "Central Communication Station" branch.
Andriy was an active public figure, a member of the Historical Club "Cold Yar," and a patron of the Kyiv Plast. He participated in all key revolutions (the Granite Revolution, the Orange Revolution, and the Revolution of Dignity).
Since the summer of 2014, he fought in Donbas as part of the "Right Sector."
From the first day of the full-scale invasion, he fought with the ODC "Carpathian Sich." He served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was a company commander, and led the defense of Soledar.
The life of 46-year-old junior lieutenant Andriy Zhovanyk was cut short on August 2, 2022, by an enemy sniper's bullet near Soledar in Donetsk region. He died while trying to evacuate the body of his comrade Yuriy Kovalenko.
Andriy was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Order of the "Golden Star."
He was a brave, generous, and hardworking person with "golden hands," who was firm and uncompromising in his principles. Documentaries have been made about him, and his words "To die in battle is an honor" have become a testament.
Andriy is survived by his wife Oksana, sons Vasyl (a bandurist, currently in the Armed Forces) and Bohdan, and daughter Kateryna.
The team at the Central Communication Station of JSC "Ukrzaliznytsia" bows its head in deep respect for their colleague. The electromechanical engineer, who was a builder of Kyiv and one of the leaders of the defense of Soledar, fell as a Hero of Ukraine while attempting to save a comrade. His indomitable spirit, honesty, and self-sacrifice set the highest standard of dignity. Glory to the Hero!
