Serhiy NAZAROV
Serhiy was born and lived in the town of Znamyanka Druha in the Kirovohrad region. He worked on the railway since 2001, starting as a track maintenance worker and eventually becoming a foreman, and later a track master in the Znamyanka track maintenance unit.
In 2021, Serhiy consciously signed a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, without telling anyone, and went to defend the country. He served as a senior mechanic-driver in the 57th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade named after the Cossack Ataman Kosty Hordiienko.
In a fatal battle, Serhiy pushed a comrade out of the cabin while driving a tank, then turned the tank around and shielded the column of soldiers, saving the lives of many Ukrainian warriors. Despite his comrades pulling him from the burning vehicle, the burns were incompatible with life. His last words to his wife from the hospital were: “Don’t worry, my dear, I’m fine, just my hands are burned. I’ll get better and come back. Take care of the kids. Everything will be alright.”
40-year-old Senior Sergeant Serhiy Nazarov died on September 7, 2022, in a hospital in Mykolaiv from burns sustained during a tank battle in the settlement of Sukhy Stavok in the Kherson region.
His sister Svitlana remembers him as a good friend, a fair and decent person, reserved and determined. He had “golden hands” and loved working around the house.
Serhiy is survived by his wife, two children, mother, and two sisters.
The team of the Znamyanka track maintenance unit of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” honors the exceptional feat of their colleague. The track master, who was determined and had “golden hands” in civilian life, died as a Hero-tankist, sacrificing his life to shield his comrades. His selflessness, love for his children, and last words are an unbreakable symbol of the will and courage of railway workers. Eternal memory and Glory!
